Remixing with Ladies on Mars

Remixing 'Biding Time' from Électriciennes and Sol Franci

My introduction to Jonathan, known professionally as Ladies on Mars, came courtesy of my good friend Alejandro who wisely directed me to his – LOM’s – rendition of Voulez-Vous. The original already a guilty pleasure of mine from days past, LOM’s remix is pure candy and I relished the idea of working together, but at the time I was immersed in the creative process with Matheus Antunes, crafting the EP we recorded with Sol Franci. Amidst the Spanish guitar melodies of the EP, there lingered echoes of Mediterranean sunsets. However, the lyrical themes veered too heavily towards introspection and heartbreak to inspire any party vibes. Yet, within Biding Time, there lay a glimmer of potential for such experimentation, both musically and thematically.

From our initial conversation, it was clear that Jonathan and I shared a musical wavelength. We swiftly agreed on the remix’s direction, and his enthusiasm ignited my own creative spark. Upon receiving the first tracks, we were enthralled, but soon realized that a vocal re-recording was imperative. It wasn’t merely a matter of tempo; the entire essence of the song had evolved, demanding a fresh vocal delivery. Fortunately, Sol embraced the challenge, returning to the studio to breathe new life into the lead vocals.

Armed with revamped arrangements aligned with the remix’s vision, Jonathan resumed production. The outcome? Two versions of the track that remain faithful to the original yet exude a groovier, sunnier disposition – perfectly timed for the Mediterranean summer. The accelerated guitars emit a playful charm, while the tempo tantalizes, inviting you to the dance floor with polite insistence, a gentle tug at your sleeve. Nothing too impetuous. After all, we wouldn’t dare spilling your Spritz.
